Frequently Asked Questions

What is All Day Kindergarten

All Day Kindergarten allows time for students to focus on the academic skills of early reading, writing, and math while providing additional minutes to more fully develop skills in the areas of social studies, science, and physical education. In accordance with state law, students must be 5 years of age on or before October 1, 2013 in order to enroll in kindergarten. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year and for every year thereafter, the age requirement for kindergarten will be 5 years old on or before September 1.

What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Transitional Kindergarten is a legislated program for children who turn 5 years old between October 2 and December 2, 2013. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year and every year thereafter, the age requirement for Transitional Kindergarten will be 5 years old between September 2 and December 2. This program was designed to meet the needs of students who would have been kindergarten eligible before SB 1381 was signed into law and changed the school admission age. Students who enroll in Transitional Kindergarten for one year will be enrolled in a regular all day kindergarten program the following year.

Fountain Valley School District does enable parents of children who turn 5 years old after July 1 to choose Transitional Kindergarten before beginning regular kindergarten. This option is based upon space availability. First priority for enrollment is given to students for whom the program was initially intended.

What is Early Entry Kindergarten?

Early Entry Kindergarten is a kindergarten jump start program for children who turn 5 on or before February 3. The program is designed to give children some formal school experience and exposure before enrollment in regular all day kindergarten the following year. Eligible students will be enrolled on a “first come/first served” basis on December 5, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the District Office. First priority for enrollment will be given to children residing within the school district boundaries. Remaining spaces will be given to families who submitted the enrollment paperwork on December 5 and have obtained an approved inter-district transfer permit from their home district.

Where are these programs going to be located?

All day kindergarten is available at all seven elementary schools in the Fountain Valley School District.

Presently, Transitional Kindergarten classes are available at Newland and Tamura Elementary Schools. Early Entry Kindergarten is located at Oka Elementary School.

What are the hours for these programs?

All day kindergarten follows the primary schedule. Transitional Kindergarten is a half-day program that runs on an early bird/late bird schedule. Please contact the school directly for specific time information.

Early Entry Kindergarten runs from 7:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., Monday through Friday.

How will enrollment work?

Each elementary school holds a Kindergarten Round-Up event to kick off enrollment for the following school year. These events are typically held in March. The only exception is enrollment for Early Entry Kindergarten, which is handled on a “first come/first served” basis. Enrollment for Early Entry Kindergarten will be held on December 5, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the District Office.

Children residing within the Fountain Valley School District boundaries will be admitted to these District programs before children on an approved Inter-District Transfer will be accepted.

Intra-district transfer requests are not necessary for Transitional Kindergarten participation. If parents want their children to remain at Newland or Tamura for regular Kindergarten the following year, they must complete an Intra-district transfer request form in the spring of the Transitional Kindergarten year.

What about transportation?

Parents will provide their own transportation for both programs.
