Frequently Asked Questions

What is All Day Kindergarten

All Day Kindergarten allows time for students to focus on the academic skills of early reading, writing, and math while providing additional minutes to more fully develop skills in the areas of social studies, science, and physical education. In accordance with state law, students must be 5 years of age on or before September 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten. Students attending our All Day Kindergarten follow the same primary schedule as students in first and second grades.

What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Transitional Kindergarten is a legislated program for children who turn 5 years old between September 2 and December 2. This program was designed to meet the needs of students who would have been kindergarten eligible before SB 1381 was signed into law and changed the school admission age. Students who enroll in Transitional Kindergarten for one year will be enrolled in a regular all day kindergarten program the following year. Students attending our Transitional Kindergarten follow the same primary schedule as students in first and second grade.

Fountain Valley School District does enable parents of children who turn 5 years old after July 1 to choose Transitional Kindergarten before beginning regular kindergarten. This option is based upon space availability. First priority for enrollment is given to students for whom the program was initially intended.

What is Early Entry Kindergarten?

Early Entry Kindergarten is a kindergarten jump start program for children who turn 5 on or before February 2, 2015. The program is designed to give children some formal school experience and exposure before enrollment in regular all day kindergarten the following year. Eligible students will be enrolled on a “first come/first served” basis in December. First priority for enrollment will be given to children residing within the school district boundaries. Remaining spaces will be available for students who have obtained an approved inter-district transfer permit from their home district. More information on Early Entry Kindergarten will be available in early October.

Where are these programs going to be located?

All Day Kindergarten is available at all seven elementary schools in the Fountain Valley School District.

Presently, Transitional Kindergarten classes are available at Gisler, Newland, Plavan, and Tamura Elementary Schools. The Early Entry Kindergarten location will be determined in early October.

What are the hours for these programs?

The All Day Kindergarten, Transitional Kindergarten, and Early Entry Kindergarten programs follow the primary schedule. Please contact the school directly for specific time information.

How will enrollment work?

Each elementary school holds a Kindergarten Round-Up event to kick off enrollment for the following school year. These events are typically held in March. The only exception is enrollment for Early Entry Kindergarten, which is handled on a “first come/first served” basis. Enrollment for Early Entry Kindergarten will be held in December.

Children residing within the Fountain Valley School District boundaries will be admitted to these District programs before children on an approved Inter-District Transfer will be accepted.

Intra-district transfer requests are not necessary for Transitional Kindergarten participation. If parents would like their children to remain at the same school for regular Kindergarten the following year, they must complete an Intra-district transfer request form in the spring of the Transitional Kindergarten year.

What about transportation?

Parents will provide their own transportation for both programs.
